What is Dry Brushing Skin and its Powerful Benefits?

What is Dry Brushing Skin and its Powerful Benefits?

We all deserve some pampering. In those precious moments between responsibilities and to-dos, spend a little time on yourself and introduce dry brushing into your skincare routine. If you don’t know what dry brushing skin is, don’t worry, we'll explain it all here.

When you’re caught up in the whirlwind of life, it can be so hard to remember to stop, breathe, and take time just for you. We wrote about how to start a mindful routine for yourself to help you appreciate yourself every day, not just every once in a while.

Give yourself something to look forward to in the mornings, like good coffee. Journaling, eating intuitively, and getting good sleep also get a feature - and so does the importance of your evening skincare routine for relaxation.

Therefore, let’s expand on that a little bit here by introducing the wonders of dry brushing!

Self care makes the difference between doing well and doing amazing

So, what is dry brushing skin?

Dry brushing skin is just what it sounds like - brushing the skin with dry bristles to exfoliate and stimulate your skin. Natural-bristled brushes are best.

It’s done without water or products, making it clean and hassle-free. The practice has been culturally used for centuries, including by Ancient Greeks, Native Americans, and in Ayurvedic medicine throughout India.

Since the skin is your body’s largest organ, it’s responsible for much of your physical health. Circulation, digestion, and waste removal are all impacted by the quality of your skin. Skincare is important to protect your emotional well-being.

In short, dry brushing is all reward, no risk - we’ll explain.

What are the most common dry brushing benefits?

It stimulates your lymphatic system

Much of your lymphatic system lies right underneath the skin’s surface.

Dry brushing massages these areas, stimulating them to increase function, reduce stress and pain, or even improve immune function.

It physically relaxes your body, keeping your mind stress-free. Relaxation also improves immune function, as the stress hormone cortisol wreaks havoc on your body and its ability to function, sleep, heal, and intuitively feel hunger.

Dry brushing distributes your body’s natural oils

Since dry brushing is, well, dry, you don’t immediately introduce any new oils or products that would strip the skin. The skin creates natural oils that are important for its function and youthful appearance - but too much or too little oil are both bad for skin quality.

The natural bristles of the brush pick up and distribute this important oil, creating a thin layer that is reintroduced into your skin’s surface. This reduces oil where it isn’t needed, and introduces it where it’s lacking.

Dry brushing increases circulation for better blood flow and appearance

The circular movement of the brush stimulates your body’s circulation system, vigorously improving blood flow to your skin and all extremities. This improves the quality on the surface and right underneath the skin, and may even reduce the appearance of cellulite!

Circulation is important, as a sluggish supply of blood in the body can cause numbness, cold extremities, and a less youthful appearance.

How to start a dry brushing skin technique

Dry brushing is a stellar method of physical exfoliation

Dry skin can weigh you down and look dull. Physical exfoliation gets rid of dirt and dead skin to create an ultra-soft feel and a youthful, glowing surface appearance.

Methodically dry brushing your skin is almost a form of meditation. It feels amazing on your skin and unlocks your mind. Repetitive, simple tasks take over the conscious part of your brain that feels the need to focus, and allows your unconscious mind to blossom freely, unobstructed by anxieties.

The physical results are immediate - you can feel them right away. Your skin can breathe, free from debris.

After dry brushing is the ultimate time to apply hydrating skincare products. We’ve written about the benefits of plant-based essential oils for your skin, and explained how the power of plants can create youthful, blemish-free, supple skin quality.

Introducing a weekly dry brushing and moisturizing session into your mindful skincare routine  with our Essential Body Set to keep your skin softer longer and give you a treat to look forward to every week. It comes with our signature serum and a luxurious dry brush.

How often should I dry brush?

Physical exfoliation accompanied by dry brushing is best done about once or twice a week - often enough to compound the results, but not so often that your skin becomes irritated.

Does dry brushing reduce cellulite?

In short, yes! There are natural ways to reduce cellulite at home, and one of our favorites is dry brushing. A subtle massage stimulates your lymphatic system and helps drain lymphatic fluid, reduce inflammation and circulation.

Does dry brushing damage skin?

In order to maintain healthy hydrated skin, you must be careful with the periodicity of dry brushing because if overdone, it could potentially lead to irritation. That’s why we recommend adding an extra step after dry brushing with our serum so that you immediately hydrate your skin after massaging.

You and your skin deserve the best

When we look good, we feel good - and supple, soft, glowing skin has a huge impact on our self-confidence and overall health. Now that you know the ins and outs of what is dry brushing skin, take the first step to elevate your skincare ritual.

Give yourself the space to reconnect with yourself, doing something just for you. It’s an act of self-love, and massaging and feeling your skin serves as a reminder to appreciate your body and all it has done for you.

Let relaxing aromas, hydration, and luxury surround you as you prepare for another week of being your best self with the power of dry brushing and high-quality skincare.
