Summer Wellness: Remember to Take Time for Yourself + Tips to Feel Your Best

Summer Wellness: Remember to Take Time for Yourself + Tips to Feel Your Best

The sun is shining, the days are longer, and nature is in full bloom. It must be summer!

The season of fun in the sun always comes with a sense of vibrancy, warmth, and renewal, which makes it an awesome time of year to recharge and uplift your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

However, summer can also be a busy season packed with vacations, overbooked social calendars, and a few more after work happy hours than usual. If you’re not careful, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush and forget to take care of yourself.

Luckily, there’s so much to love about summer when it comes to tending to your health and well-being. After all, it’s the season of farmers markets galore, long days basking in the sun, and time spent in nature. Sometimes, we all need a little reminder to take care of ourselves, and maybe some fresh self-care ideas to shake things up.

If you need a little extra support, we’ve got you. Check out our summer wellness tips, and then start incorporating them into your routine!

5 Wellness tips for summer to add to your self-care ritual

Connect with the sun and spend time in nature

Summer is a time of abundant sunlight, which triggers our bodies to produce the vitamin D we need for bone health, immune function, and overall well-being. Being in nature has also been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels, with research from Frontiers Psychology demonstrating that spending as little as 20 minutes in nature can significantly reduce cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress.

Clearly, spending even just a little time outside goes a long way. Whether you enjoy swimming, hiking, gardening, or simply taking a leisurely walk, spending time outdoors and soaking up the sun's rays can contribute to our energy levels and overall vitality, so get off your couch and get outside!

Remember to protect your skin from sun exposure

Spending time in the sun is great for your health, but protecting your skin from too much exposure is an essential part of self-care.

At a minimum, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on all exposed skin, even on cloudy days. Apply it generously and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you're sweating or swimming.

When the sun's rays are strongest, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., try to stay in the shade under trees, sun umbrellas, or beach tents. This reduces direct exposure to the sun and lowers the risk of sunburn and skin damage.

If you do get sunburned, take steps to soothe and heal your skin. Apply Aloe vera gel, moisturize with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion, and avoid further sun exposure until your skin has fully healed.

Build a meditation garden where you can unwind

When you need a place to escape the stresses of daily life, your garden could be the perfect antidote. Being surrounded by nature, soothing colors, and calming scents can help reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calmness. It provides a dedicated space for self-care, reflection, and connection with nature—an oasis of tranquility that supports your mental, emotional, and spiritual growth.

Cook a new recipe with fresh seasonal produce

Whether you’re craving mouthwatering melon, tasty tomatoes, or an abundance of fresh fruits, it’s time to hit the farmer’s market and fire up the grill! This time of year comes with a seemingly endless supply of refreshing salads, sippable smoothies, and delectable delicacies packed with nutrients that provide a natural energy boost, support our immune system, and promote overall health.

When it comes to eating seasonally, there’s no time like summer. Stock up your pantry with some of our favorite seasonal staples!

  • Watermelon: Juicy, hydrating watermelon is a classic summer fruit. It's packed with water, vitamins, and antioxidants, making it a perfect choice for hot days.
  • Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are at their peak during the summer. They’re both delicious and rich in antioxidants and fiber, which promote good health.
  • Cucumbers: Cool, refreshing cucumbers make a great addition to salads, sandwiches, or infused water.
  • Fresh Herbs: Basil, mint, cilantro, and parsley thrive during the summer. Adding fresh herbs to your dishes not only enhances flavor, but also provides additional nutrients and antioxidants.

Enjoy moments of peace through reading or journaling

Creating moments of peace for journaling or reading can enhance your self-care routine and provide a space for reflection and relaxation this summer.

Choose a quiet area in your home or with minimal distractions where you can retreat. This could be a cozy corner, a peaceful garden, or a dedicated room where you can have some solitude. Then, create a soothing ambiance by dimming the lights, lighting candles or diffusing essential oils like Lavender, Chamomile, or Sandalwood. Finally, establish a consistent time for journaling or reading to make it a regular part of your self-care practice. This will create a sense of rhythm and familiarity, making it easier to transition into a peaceful state of mind.

Tailor these suggestions to your preferences and needs, allowing yourself the space and time to fully immerse in the peacefulness of the moment.
